A Blessed Event!!!

Hey all!

I wanted to let you know that we had a "blessed event"!!! We adopted a new puppy named Maddie (short for Madeline). She's a 10 month old purebred Great Dane pup that we got from a rescue. She is all legs, but as sweet as honey! She was purchased from a breeder but the new owners did not get her vaccinated and she developed parvo. The rescue group found her, treated her and brought her back to her wonderful glory. Her temperament is true Great Dane - a total sweetheart! We are over the moon with her. The other dogs, Pepper (our alpha Lab/Pit mix) and Zeke (our Great Dane/Mastiff mix) have accepted her very well. Zeke fell head over heels in love with her initially, but now he's a little tired of her puppy antics. While she is actually slightly taller than Zeke, he is much more filled out than she is, and has us realizing what a truly huge dog he is! He weighs 160, but that's relative, right?!

Anyhow, I wanted to share our good fortune and blessings with you, and wish you all the same. Happy holidays!

Darla

P.S. Zeke is scheduled for surgery on 1/14/08 at UC Davis for his ACL repair.

Bay Area Dane Meet Up

All,

At www.meetup.com, there are several groups of people with Danes that meet both at Point Isabel, Crissy Field and in the Los Gatos/San Jose areas. I know that the Point Isabel one is usually well attended, and the next meet up will be at 10 AM on March 15. I have to work, but I would have LOVED to have gone.

Hi all,

Due to some Halloween overexertion, our Zeke had a ruptured ACL. Our vet says he needs surgery but he's too big for him to do it. He's referred us to Davis which is booked through January. Does anyone have any other Bay Area recommendations? Have any of you gone through this? What the post-op recovery like?

I am really bummed about my pup (he's 7). Encourage me, somebody, please?!

With my current situation I unfortunatly have to give my dane (bronson) up for adoption. my boyfriend and I of four years have decided to go our own ways therefor my finacial cituation is going to be cut in half. So Ill be getting a small apartment which is not fair for such a large dog. Not to mention when Im not home my ex is and when he isnt home I am so there is always someone here to be with him, take him out, feed him and so on. Once my ex moves out which is this monday there wont be anyone here while I'm at work... I love Bronson with all of my heart but I know that this is whats best for him. He is a year and 3 months. Merl, up-to-date on all of his shots, nuetered and uncropped. He is very well behaved and gets along great with children and other dogs. Cats on the other hand he'll chase until he cant chase anymore.. he doesnt want to hurt them just wants to play. When he finnaly catches up he just licks them up and down. Were looking for someone who owns their own home and has or has previously had a great dane. I belive only a great dane owner truley knows how high maitnence they are. There are pictures on my myspace so feel free to check those out. ( http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=459562&albumId=1717388 30 pictures in all. ) If ou have anymore questions please message me and NOT reply to this bulletin, I want to make sure I hear from people interested and I wouldnt want to not see any replys so its just easier for me to get messages straight to me. I do live in vermont so please do not message me unless you do live somewhat close and you are infact interested. Thanks again and please put out the word if you know anyone in the area!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked at the first 20 photos of Bronson, and he's beautiful! Please help this boy find a home!

Thanks for reading. :-)

Great Dane Advice?

I'm new to this group, and was hoping all you GD lovers can help me. My husband and I love Great Danes and have talked about getting one for a few months now (he has family members with them, so we've been around them a lot). Anyhow, I wanted to find a young adult, so we've been looking into rescue organizations. But, yesterday we heard of a one year old Blue male who owners have another Dane and two little dogs. They are downsizing and won't have room for all the dogs, so they are looking to sell the younger of the two. We have a Westie as well (who likes big dogs), and this just seemed like the perfect situation: a young adult who's housebroken, gets along with little dogs, doesn't jump fences, and is coming from a loving home. We went to see him yesterday, and what a great dog! He's really big, only 1 yr and already 130 lbs. This dog has a really, really wide head. Most of the blues I've seen have narrower heads. Could it be a mix or do some of them really do have massive heads?

My questions for all of you are:
1) what questions should I be sure to ask the owners? They said that he is AKC but they never sent in his papers...is this a problem if I'm not wanting to breed or anything?
2) What would you tell a non Dane owner who is thinking about getting one as far as what they would be getting into?

I love dogs and would love a Dane, but I just want to be wise about this. I want this Dane to be in the right place as mich as his owners do...can you help me?

So, I walk by this hair salon every day after work and peek through the door so I can crush out on the adorable Great Dane that belongs to the owner there.

He's a gorgeous Harlequin, and I've watched him grow from a very large puppy to a ridiculously humongous adult over the last year and a half. And I've seen his ears in casts (I guess you'd call them casts; they're padded inside and wrapped with tape, joined together at the top) FOUR TIMES. What's going on here? Is his owner so intent on having his ears stick up that he'd subject this beautiful dog to surgery again and again, to get the right "effect"?

Am I misinterpreting? Is it strictly cosmetic? Because, if it is, I just can't understand it.

My dane is, well to say the least an odd dog.
She's hard headed, and the first dog I've ever owned (my first dane too) who backtalks--if she gets told no she WILL argue, its not like a threatening bark but "but I wanna!" kinda mix.
She still gets into things she shouldn't at three years old, and will eat ANYTHING but pretzels and peppers (and benedryl)

Yet this dog is really my best friend, she's one of the reasons I'm still alive (I suffer rather severe depression), and her mad antics keep me from taking much too seriously. I was told in the past if she hadn't been an accidental breeding she probably wouldn't have been "allowed" to live because of slight issues (she's nearly solid white, and her pupils are malformed, but she can see--mostly well--though thinks shadows are people sometimes).

Hedwig is moving on

at 3:00 pm PST this Thursday the 3rd, Hedwig will be moving on to the next part of his spirit's journey. This amazing puppy was diagnosed with wobblers a few months ago, and has progressed rapidly. We do not want to give him a life of surgeries, drugs or limited movement, and my heart knows that it's time to let him pass before he starts to suffer, as his quality of life has been declining rapidly.

He's an amazing boy, with so much love and tenderness. He just turned 1, he has been a bright and shining star, destined to shine for all. Please take a moment this Thursday to think of him. We'll be going for a final trip in the morning to Fort Funston with a photographer. His final week is being filled with friends, treats, cuddling, and tons of steak and fruit and love.

Dane sleeping schedules

ok, I need some reassurance, as I'm a worrying, guilty dane mother. Does my dog get enough attention and exercise? I'm very busy, so I worry about these things. I live at home, by myself, and I work at home as well. Here's the typical puppy schedule for Hedwig, who is 9.5 months old.

6:00 am wake up and lay by bathroom while mommy gets ready
7:00 am 10 block walk while playing with toy (tug, chew and run)
8:00 am - 12:00 breakfast, then downtime whie mommy works (usually about 30 minutes of toytime, 30 minutes of pets and hangout at my feet, and 2 1/2 hours of SLEEP
12:00 - 1:00 pm 10 block brisk walk, no toys
1:00 - 5:00 more downtime while mommy works
5:00 - 6:30 play at the park or brisk 10 block walk or training class
6:30 - 10:00 downtime while mommy does more work, though with random cuddling and toy moments, but still lots of sleep
10:00 pm - 6:00 am SLEEP with cuddles before bed

OK, is this enough? I've added it up, and it's almost 18 or 19 hours of sleep a day. Should I be doing more?

Thanks
Mercedes

my sister's blue murle is just adorable and fun loving, unless someone is not white. for a while she lived near a bad neighborhood and there were lots of younger african americans who weren't very nice to anyone and were caught being mean to her, but we've had pleanty of black friends over and as soon as they get in the yard, no matter where she is in the house she starts barking. if my sis or anyone else in our family were prejudice i might understand this, but we just aren't.

has this ever happened to anyone else? and does anyone have any sujestions as to what could be done about it?

walking around in the mission/sf with a great dane has been pretty nuts. most days i just walk quickly and try not to make eye contact with anyone and wear headphones to drown them out. there's the regular horse, cow, giraffe, livestock commentary. worse is the small girl/big dog comments. or the ones about how much he must poop or asking how much it costs to feed such a dog. every once in a while he will stop traffic bc someone will screech to a halt to yell out the window "is that a dog or a horse?" or "do you need a saddle for that thing?" i love my dane, but sometimes city living gets a bit old with all of the comments from the peanut gallery.

Torn ACL?

I'm looking for anyone who might have some experience with this. 3
weeks ago, my 10 month old dane was running and hit a hole and fell,
screaming and couldn't get up on his own. The vet took x-rays, and
didn't see much. The eventual diagnosis was a class 3 sprain on his
back right leg. She also said this could develop into slight tears of
the ACL.

Today is 3 weeks, and he does not limp, but is obviously favoring his
leg. He doesn't run at all anymore except for an occasional lope, and
if he accidentally puts weight on his back leg it often won't support
him. If I tell him to sit, sometimes he'll sit normally, and
sometimes he'll lay down flat on all fours which is not normal either.

The vet said that a torn ACL is very painful, and he does not seem to
be in much pain. He did whimper today for the first time when he
tried to get up to chase me, but otherwise hasn't indicated pain. But
still, he is tripping more and his movement isn't at all what it was
before the sprain.

Has anyone seen this? Should I give the sprain more time to heal or
go to get him an MRI? How long is recovery for something like this?
I've got a couple of flights of stairs and I'm terrified of what I'll
do with him if he does have to have surgery.

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Hey all, just wanted to let you all know I had to give up my dane. I have recently been through a break up with my daughters father and am working 6 days a week to keep it together. Biggies did not like it and was developing really bad behaviors because of it. It was so hard for me to do. Every dog I have ever had I kept untill the end. It so helps to come to this tribe and read about your experiences and see your pictures. Thanks and here's to Biggies.

They have wonderful insights into the minds and hearts of our beloved Giants and I think they will be able to add some solid advice to our Dane community. I keep my fingers crossed! XXXX

Need a crate in the bay area

Hey! Hedwig's been staying with a friend while I travel, but he's outgrown their crates. Lugging this midwest crate across the bay area is getting insane (I go out of town once or twice a month), and I'm hoping someone out there in the bay area has a crate that they don't use anymore that they might be interested in selling. I'm willing to pay cash and pick up wherever in the bay area you'd like.

Thanks!

We took a trip out of state a few weeks ago and I wasn't able to bring my girl with me, so she went to a kennel. When I got her home, I noticed that she had started howling. I thought her bark was loud, my goodness, her howls shake the rafters on the other side of the house! Thankfully she hasn't done it lately (hopefully she's forgotten how).

Any other Danes howl, and can you hear 'em a mile away?

OK, so I got a great dane t-shirt. I know it's wrong... but c'mon, it's pretty cool as t-shirts go.

I got the babydoll and the bumper sticker "Your Honor Student Is Merely a Pawn In My Great Dane's World Domination Plot"

Oh, and we took pictures with Santa yesterday. We got one of Hedwig with his front paws in Santa's lap biting at the ball on top of his santa hat. Once I get the CD, I'll be sharing, whether you like it or not!

Anyone else do really wrong, wacko things with your giant kids? No matching shirts I hope!

A friendly nudge reminded me I hadn't posted pup pics recently. I threw two up on the tribe, and have more in my profile. Hedwig is 12 weeks old now, and already 38 lbs. I'm not sure if that is big for his age or not, but he's been growing at 4 or 5 lbs a week these days. I'm keeping his protein low, and have even had to throw in more carbs to fill him up, but he's still had some growing pains, poor little guy.

Yay!

Hey all!
Im looking to get a puppy for my apt.
Here is my living situation, tell me what you think:
I live in new orleans.
2 floor apt
I like to go for walks.
have 3 other dogs over here(not roaming, usually inside with owners)
I dont have a yard(well maybe a little court yard, but i like to roam the streets and I would take him/her with me).
My apt is a decent size (2.5 bdr 2 bath)
I have four flights of stairs at the apt(if that means anything).
I have previous dog experience(border collies)
I love big doggies and give them lots of attention.

So what do you think?

Hey You all I'm so glad that you have all joined this tribe! I was afraid that I was the only Dane lover I knew and now I know more! Yeah! I would like to organize a day maybe once a month for our biggins to play. I know we don't all live in SF (including me) but I was hopeing to organize a place and a day for those of you who do and in other areas for those of us that don't. Are you guys up for that. My poor girl has a hard time playing with smaller dogs they get so intimidated by her and so do their owners. She was raised with 50 other danes and really misses playing with dogs her size. Let me know if your intrested.

so, i moved to a slightly ghetto part of the city about a month ago. the building behind my place has been knocked down, so my back door is basically open to the street. 5 nights out of 7, someone has been scaling my roof during the wee hours and tried at least once to look through my skylight. (i can see the handprints) mojo (my 3.5 yr old 185lb of lovin) went ballistic when he heard the footsteps and i believe scared the would be thieves away. my neighbors on the otherhand, weren't so lucky. the thieves crept in while his family was sleeping and stole a laptop out his daughter's bedroom! luckily she was fine and no one was hurt. but they keep coming back.

being a single female, i am grateful to have my dane with me protecting the house! mojo is such a gentle soul, but he sure looks menacing when barking and snarling at strange footsteps in the night!

Just put my deposit down today on my first dane! A bouncing blue baby boy :) He was just born yesterday!!! The breeder is sending me pics this weekend, and I'll make sure to post. I am so, freakin' excited.

I've been doing a lot of research and reading, but welcome any tips for a new dane owner from those of you who've already had these amazing companions in your lives.

I just joined this group and am so happy to know there are other Great Dane people out there. When I have a minute to figure it out, I'll post some photos of Alfred -- he's our six year old fawn -- a couch-sleeping, people leaning, slobber-slinging friend to all.

He likes Bernal Heights hill and Fort Funston. Does this group ever meet up at dog parks?

BILL NUMBER: AB 418
INTRODUCED BY Assembly Member Koretz
FEBRUARY 15, 2005

An act to add Section 597.7 to the Penal Code, relating to animals.
LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
AB 418, as introduced, Koretz. Dogs: animal cruelty: ear cropping.
Existing law makes it a crime for any person to engage in acts that constitute cruelty to animals, as specified.
This bill would make it a misdemeanor for any person to perform,or otherwise procure or arrange for the performance of, an ear cropping procedure on any dog within this state, except if performed by a licensed veterinarian solely for a therapeutic purpose, as defined.
*********
I'm sure Dane owners will be interested in the outcome of this bill.
Also Doberman, Schnauzers, etc...
*********
Could use help to notify assemblyman to defeat this!

AB 418 on suspense!

CA Ear Crop Bill Stopped in Committee
AKC STATEMENT: [Thursday, May 26, 2005]
AB418, a bill to ban ear cropping of dogs, was held on the Suspense File yesterday by the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The bill may not be considered again until spring of 2006 when yet another Suspense hearing will be held. While AB418 could indeed be released next year, the proposed legislation is dead for 2005.

Congratulations to the countless purebred dog owners who contacted their Assemblymembers to express opposition to AB418. We urge you to continue monitoring this issue closely and watch AKC's Web site for news of further developments.

As I was browsing through the super pet department store, I was looking at sweaters, kennels, food, etc... Then I headed into the toy aisle...

Now, I've learned in my research that Danes will destroy an entire couch, if not given the proper chewies when they are teething...

Do you folks have any recommendations for someone new to the breed? Do your Danes have any favorites? Any advice on things to steer clear of?

Thanks! :)

Hi, Newbie Here!

Greetings!

I am so glad to have found this tribe... :)

I do not yet have a Dane, however I am planning on getting one in the very near future (by the end of this summer). And I am so excited!

I plan on getting a female, pup, haven't decided on a color, but am leaning toward brindle, I think. :)

I have bought some books about Dane husbandry and I have visited COUNTLESS websites.

How do you all like having Danes?

:)

What dry kibble do you feed?

I'm curious what kind of dry kibble you feed your Danes? My girl seems to really like her food, but the pet store folks recently questioned my choice sending me into doubt...so, I thought I'd see what you like.

Feel free to share non dry kibble suggestions as well, however it's unlikely that I'll go the raw diet route, but I'm always open to info.

Thanks!
